CHAPTER 48

THE CHASE

“This has to be by far the stupidest thing you have ever done Edward.”  I knew he could hear me as we ran through the Angeles National Forest through Kern County.

I was surprised at how fast she could run. Almost as fast as Edward but he still caught up to her launched himself at her and they rolled to the ground. She turned and hissed at him. I didn’t blame her one fucking bit. I was just as pissed off at my brother from keeping this from her as she was. I didn’t even fucking know about it until Alice caught the vision only a second before she bolted out the door and took off running.

All I heard was Alice scream “He slipped! He fucking slipped! She is on the run we have to go after her!”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I yelled as I found myself running after my little sister.

“Edward could hear Bella after he changed her! He could hear her thoughts but he never told her! Well the dumb ass repeated something that she didn’t verbalize! She found out he has heard her thoughts and she ran! She is headed north.”

That was all she had to say and I kicked it up a few notches once I caught their scents. I could hear Tia and Ben yelling ahead of us for Bella to stop. They were still miles away but she wasn’t stopping. Edward would catch her. I knew he had the speed. There was only one problem. She didn’t want to stop for him and I can’t say I didn’t blame her. The thought of learning that someone was in your head for well over a what a month now? Shit I would be pissed off too.

“What the fuck was he thinking?” Rosalie sneered as she picked up her pace to keep up.

“He is a love struck fool!” Alice screeched.

“I for one think we need to kick his ass for this shit!” Jasper added his two cents.

“You need to speed your ass up and catch up to her and calm her the fuck down MOVE!” I growled at him.

The first time he caught up to her, I thought for sure we could get her calmed down enough to bring her back to LA.

As soon as Emmett told me to get her calm, I sped up and was right on Ben’s tail as we came into a clearing where she and Edward were facing off. The look on her face was feral.

“Stay the fuck away from me! How could you!”

She started to bolt, he tackled her again, and I got within range and tried to send out a wave of calm to cool her off.

Funny thing…She didn’t respond.  At all.

Her anger was totally her own and I could feel it almost as if she sent it right back to me and shoved it pushing every bit of calm out of me. I found myself fighting my own anger. Anger at Edward. I didn’t understand it. It didn’t make sense. I couldn’t handle it anymore, Alice looked at me with wide eyes, and all I could do was apologize.

“I know baby I fucked up…but Bella listen to me! I swear it isn’t all the time! Please Bella you gotta believe me!”

“I don’t believe anything you say anymore!” She hissed and lunged at him and to my surprise, he let her. He let her tackle him and she started to snap her teeth as she hovered over him his back to the ground.

“I deserve it do what ever you want! I swear I am so fucking sorry!”

“Fuck you!”

And she was off again only this time we thought we lost her as we all bolted after her. I stayed a ways back because the rage that girl had inside of her could seriously destroy anyone or anything it wanted to. I was scared for her but at the same time I knew Edward had it coming and he deserved her anger. What was he thinking?

We all grew to accept his gift but I have to admit to know someone can hear your every thought was really hard to deal with. No seriously. One day you meet someone move in with them trying to be a family and this mother fucker waltzes in and gives you a smirk like he knows what your thinking and the sad part was he did. It was fucked up. But over time, we got used to it. Edward didn’t ever abuse his ability. He was respectable but knowing that he knew left you feeling raw and exposed.

Poor Bella, I can only imagine the things she thinks he heard. I am curious now though what he means as to the fact that it’s not all the time.

“Alice he can’t hear her like us?” I yelled.

“NO! He has only been able to a handful of times and it’s usually when they are intimate!”

“Oh hell!” Emmett bellowed and sped up faster.

“Ben baby are we not heading north?”

“Yes.”

“Call Carlisle! Maybe he can stop her!”

Bella had outsmarted Edward. She took to the trees and was tree limb hopping.  Clever girl.

I felt like shit! I kept this from her too but I didn’t think it was my place. It wasn’t my secret to tell! Now I wished I had called him out on it. In front of her. So they could have dealt with this. My God, we just got them into the mindset of their roles. They were doing so well. I was so happy for her. She just wanted to please him. That is all she has ever wanted to do was please him.

“Edward I could kick you ass for this.”

Here is the kicker. Edward is fast on the ground. I am the treehopper and I can catch her. The question is can I stop her. She is a newborn and she is stronger than I am not to mention the fact that she is pissed. I am a little worried she may turn and bite me but I figure its fucking worth it if I can stop her.

I leapt two trees to the left, had a gain on her, and came back around and did something I never in a million years think I would do. I attacked her head on and we rolled to the ground.

“Bella please stop and listen to me!”

“NO! Leave me alone!” she hissed at me but she didn’t bite.

“Bella he can’t hear you all the time!”

“I don’t care! He could and he never said anything Oh my GOD! That’s so…so….” I could see the devastation in her eyes. Damn him to hell for this!

Edward caught up and he circled her with Ben right behind him. We had her surrounded.

“Bella please you have to listen to me! I am sorry baby I swear! I didn’t mean it! I mean…I mean I didn’t tell you because I was afraid!”

She turned and leapt over me and I tried to stop her but she was too fast.

“BEN! Call Carlisle!” I yelled back at him as I took off after her again.

“Babe your phone is ringing.”

I kissed Esme on the top of her head, reached over, and grabbed it off the table.

I guess ignoring it isn’t going to help if I was needed at the hospital. I picked it up and saw Ben’s name flash on the display. Odd I thought Ben was with Edward and Bella and they were due here soon.

“Hello Ben.”

“Carlisle!”

His voice didn’t sound like his normal voice. It almost sounded frantic.

“Ben what is it? Is something wrong?” His phone was full of background noise, it almost sounded like wind.

“Are you running?” I asked.

“I am we are chasing Bella. She is headed your way! She found out that Edward could hear her thoughts and she freaked out and took off running!”

“What are you talking about? Edward said he couldn’t hear her.”

“Well it was after the change. The problem is we can’t get her to stop for any of us! Can you possibly head her off and make an attempt before she gets to you? We are coming up near the Redwoods in Northern California. Carlisle she is really upset.”

“I will try.”

I hung up, slipped my phone in my pocket, and told Esme we needed to try to stop her.

I explained on the way and I had no idea what was going on but I couldn’t let her get past me. Esme and I ran heading right for her.

I breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh thank God. She is going to stop! Everyone back off and let her run! Carlisle is going to intercept her and get her to stop!”

Edward turned and ran back to me. “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“She’s freaked out she doesn’t know who to trust but Carlisle is someone that she feels wouldn’t lie to her. She will stop.”

The look on my brother’s face almost had me feeling sorry for him. I said almost. I laid into him as we stood in a circle around him glaring at him. I started first.

“What did I tell you?”

“Alice just don’t I fucking know already.”

“No Edward you don’t know already.” I mimic his stupid feel sorry for me brooding attitude and let him have it.

“There comes a time brother when someone you love may need an intervention and right now I am kicking myself for not intervening sooner! Damn you Edward I fucking told you tell her! Don’t give me this waiting for the right time bullshit I FUCKING TOLD YOU!”

Now Emmett had a hold of me holding me back. I hissed at my idiot brother.

“Calm down there little filly. Your about to pop a venom vessel.” Emmett chuckled holding my arms.

“Let her at him Emmett for once I fully agree!” Tia stomped her foot. Ben chuckled.

Edward’s eyes widened.

“So what is this gang up on me now?” he snapped. He had the audacity to snap. How dare he!

“As a matter of fact it is! Damn you Edward Cullen we love her and now she thinks we betrayed her to! You rat bastard! I didn’t know a thing about it and Alice what the hell? Maybe if you had told us then we could have clued her in!” Rosalie snapped.

“Hey now, this isn’t Alice’s fault.” Jasper defended me. I loved my Jazzy.

“Honey, she should have been to us by now.” Esme was right next to me keeping up.

I stopped and tried to catch a scent any scent. I didn’t catch any other scent that led me to think she was already here and passed through. I did catch a few old vampire scents from nomads hunting or passing through. She was right she should have crossed our path if she was headed through the redwoods.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Edward and it automatically went to voice mail.  Odd.

I then remembered that Ben was the one that called and returned the call to him. He answered.

“Ben this is Carlisle.”

“Great have you stopped her?”

“She hasn’t made it to us yet.”

“What do you mean she hasn’t made it to you yet? She was headed right for you!”

Where the hell was she then?

“There is no sign of her are you sure she was coming this way?”

My eyes darted to Edward who was still arguing with Rosalie. Alice turned and looked at me and I swear to God I have seen humans pale in color right before I have taken their life but to watch little Alice Cullen go from pale to nearly transparent stunned me as her eyes looked glazed over and her mouth hung open for several seconds before she finally gasped.

“OH FUCK NO!!NO!!NO!!” I heard Edward yell and he started running calling out for her.

“BELLA!!!”

“Ben are you still there?” Carlisle was in my ear and I stood here utterly confused.

Alice started to stutter out words but it didn’t make any sense until I heard one word that nearly sunk my already dead heart.

James.

Then before I knew what was happening every Cullen took off after Edward. Tia looked just as confused as I did.

“Carlisle something is wrong! I don’t know what the hell just happened but Alice and Edward are doing that weird shit where they are talking to each other and Edward took off running. Meet us!”

I shut the phone and I was hot on Tia’s tail as she took to the trees. She was faster that way and that girl could fly. She could catch up to Edward the fastest and that rather worried me because I didn’t know what in the hell exactly was happening.

The Cullen’s have a really strange way of being able to communicate shit to each other that I don’t fully grasp. I understand that Alice sees the future and Edward reads minds and then it hit me. Alice saw something and Edward must have seen it through her thoughts.

Tia and I have always been friends with them but to spend any real time with them was unusual. Edward was the only one I had ever really hung with more than the others because of this lifestyle.

I kicked up my speed and fell in line behind them after Edward. Something told me things were about to get worse if James is in the area.

“Well, Well, Well, look who we have here. Gee Lauren…it looks like we aren’t the only ones that have gone through some changes eh?”

I can’t believe that Bella Swan just ran right to me. What are the fucking odds?

I came to a dead stop when I caught the scent of a vampire I didn’t recognize. Something in my instinct was telling me to stop. That is when I saw her. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was Heidi only she wasn’t Heidi as in human Heidi she was Heidi and in Heidi is now a vampire. There was a blur of blonde and suddenly I recognized the girl that stood next to her. What was her name….I thought….Laurie? No….Lauren. It was as if she appeared out of nowhere. They stood there with their heads cocked slightly and evil looking grins on their faces.

I realized no one was behind me or catching up to me. I was all alone and the moment I realized it was the exact moment I saw the flame of red hair graced on the arm of him as they casually walked out of the far line of trees. Victoria laughed this evil wicked laugh, I heard his throaty chuckle, and he had a look in his eyes that had them alight in amusement.

I tried to see if I could hear Edward or anyone and it was quiet. I was in serious trouble here and it was no one’s fault but my own.

I thought vampires weren’t supposed to be afraid. So why the fuck was I?

I tilted my head to the side to get a really good look at her. She was exquisite. She was alone and I wanted her.

God please if you have ever existed and I didn’t think so please just this once let me believe in you. Let me get to her! Please…Forgive me for whatever I have done. Just please…not her!
